 PIANA DEGLI ALBANESI

Piana degli Albanesi was founded in the late 15th century by Albanian refugees fleeing from the Turkish invasion who were given permission to settle in some mainly uninhabited parts of western Sicily.

The principal buildings are the churches of San Giorgio and San Demetrio but the territory also features ine presence of Lake Albanesi, the oldest artificial basin on the island.

Situated on the shore of Lake Learolo, 25 km from Palermo, is Santa Cristina Gela, the smallest Albanian settlement in Sicily and founded in 1691 by the inhabitants of Piana.

Mezzojuso, at the foot of the La Brigna hill, also became an Albanian centre in the 15th century. The 16th-century church of San Nicolo is one of the two main churches and adopts the Greek rite.

Farther south is Contessa Entellina, which has developed around the northern slopes of Mt Genuardo where the first Greek-Albanian settlers arrived in the mid 15th century, and Palazzo Adriano, with a radial urban layout around the central Piazza Umberto I, on which stand the two mair churches.

One adopts the Greek rite am is called Santa Maria Assunta; dating from the late 15th century, it was enlarged in the 18th century.
