 SCIACCA

SCIACCA - Lying on the road between Agrigento and Selinunte, Sciacca is one of Sicily's oldest towns; it was founded in the 6th century BC by the Selinuntini, who made it their spa. Indeed, the quality and abundance of its waters and mud have, over the centuries, brought it much of its fame.

The town, known for its pottery, developed on a number of natural terraces that descend to the sea and it conserves an urban plan dating from the Arab and Norman period.

The centre of the Sciacca today is Piazza Scandaliato, overlooking the sea, and on it stand the 18th-century church of San Domenico and the Collegio dei Gesuiti, now the Town Hall; not far away is the Duomo, built in 1108 and rebuilt in 1656.

Beyond Via Licata lies the weave of narrow streets that forms the old medieval Terravecchia district, and the terraced area rising steeply from the jetty to the town centre remains the quarter of fishermen and potters.

Visit also Palazzo Steripinto, with diamond-pointed rustication, built in 1501 in an original Catalan-Sicilian style, and the church of Santa Margherita, with a fine Gothic-Renaissance entrance adorned with statues by Francesco Laurana.
