 TINDARI

TINDARI - The sanctuary of the Madonna di Tindari and the Graeco-Roman remains are the main attractions of this town in the province of Messina, which first appeared around the end of the 4th century BC.

The Greek colony of Tyndaris was founded by Dionysus the Elder, tyrant of Syracuse, and experienced great prosperity during the period of Roman rule, when the original Greek urban layout was radically altered.

The archaeological remains include the walls, which only enclosed the city where it was not naturally protected by the contours of the territory, the basilica, the theatre and the insula romana, an entire district that includes the baths and a nobleman's house, both paved with mosaics.

The recently constructed sanctuary stands to the southeast of the excavations; it conserves a Byzantine Black Madonna and is the object of pilgrimages, particularly in the Marian month of May. From here you can see the Marinello lakes, constantly changing sheets of water created in the sandy bay by the incoming sea, and a recently established Total Nature Reserve.
