Pizzo Carbonara
(Carbonara Peak)
Length 9 km
Time 4 h |
Starting
from Rifugio Marini at Piano Battaglia you walk down for about 1,5
km along the provincial road towards Collesano, until you get to a
sharp turn on the left (1,519 m) from which you take a winding path
on the right that climbs up along the western slope of Pizzo
Carbonara At about 1,850 m, along the edge of very steep gullies
above Piano Zucchi, you leave the path, turn right and walk on
across the steepest slope, along an unmarked path, through dohnic
fields The rocks bear visible traces of organisms typical of the
coral reefs that lived in the area during the Mesozoic Era
Proceeding south-east you get to the top of Pizzo Carbonara (1,979
m), the highest non-volcanic peak in Sicily Then you walk down
towards the south-east along an unmarked path until you get to Piano
della Principessa (1,880 m), a wide grassy plateau, after having
briefly climbed up the slope that marks its south-east rim, you go
down through the beeches that cover the flanks of the Vallone di
Zottafonda From here you reach another path that leads to the
Battaglietta dohne and eventually can get back to Piano Battaglia
